Update: due to April Fools we've decided to leave the main building intact in its original state.
But did you know that the VU Main Building and the New University Building have green-blue roofs? These are in full bloom in summer and attract many insects and birds. To learn more about what we're doing about biodiversity, visit vu.nl/sustainability
The decision to paint the building blue was made after a careful consideration of the role that bees play in the ecosystem. Bees are vital pollinators that help in the production of food, but their population has been declining due to factors such as habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use.
By painting the building blue, it is expected that more bees will be attracted to the Zuidas district, which will not only benefit the building but also the surrounding environment. The blue color has been scientifically proven to attract bees, and it is hoped that this will help in increasing the local bee population and therefore promote biodiversity.
The project is a joint effort between VU Amsterdam and the Botanical Garden Zuidas, who are committed to creating a more sustainable environment. The painting of the building will be done using environmentally friendly materials to minimize the impact on the environment.
"We are excited about this project and its potential to contribute to the environment. We believe that small actions can make a big difference, and this is one of the ways we can play our part in creating a more sustainable planet," said Board member Marcel Nollen.
The paintwork is scheduled to begin this spring, and it is expected to be completed within two months. VU Amsterdam encourages members of the community to participate in the project and learn more about the importance of bees in the ecosystem.
With this initiative, VU Amsterdam aims to set an example for other buildings and businesses to follow, and hopes to inspire more people to take action towards creating a more sustainable future.
