25 October 2023
Pol van Hoften joined the mathematics department as an assistant professor in September.

Pol's research is in arithmetic algebraic geometry and is part of the Langlands program. He is mainly interested in the mod p algebraic geometry of Shimura varieties, and more recently also in their p-adic analytic geometry.

Before moving to the VU, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford university with Richard Taylor. Before that, he obtained his Phd from King's College London under supervision of James Newton and Ana Caraiani.

When he is not doing research, Pol is an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy and loves to spend time in nature and with family.
