Mathisca de Gunst and Thomas Rot appointed board members of KWG

4 October 2023
Two members of staff at the Vrije Universiteit have been appointed board members of the KWG: Mathisca de Gunst serves as the chair and Thomas Rot serves as the vice-treasurer. Both are excited and honored to serve on the board of the oldest national mathematics society in the world.

The Royal Dutch Mathematical Society https://www.wiskgenoot.nl/, the Koninlijk Wiskundig Genootschap (KWG), was founded in 1778; it still carries its 18th-century motto, Untiring labor overcomes all. In all other respects, the Society has adapted to the 21st century. It serves as the professional organization of individuals, particularly in the Netherlands, whose activities are related to mathematics.

The KWG organizes a variety of conferences and symposia focused at different groups of mathematicians. The Netherlands Mathematical Congress (NMC)  https://mathematischcongres.nl/ is an annual two-day conference that attracts a large part of the mathematics community in the Netherlands. Once every three years at the NMC, the Brouwer Medal is awarded to a prominent mathematician. The Winter Symposium https://www.wiskgenoot.nl/index.php?page=34&sid=2 is aimed at high school teachers. The KWG supports the yearly Study Group Mathematics Industry https://www.swi-wiskunde.nl/about-swi/ to promote knowledge transfer between academic mathematicians and industry.

The KWG publishes the Nieuw Archief voor Wiskunde https://www.nieuwarchief.nl/, a beautiful quarterly for all of its members, with a famous problem section. Further, it publishes the likewise beautiful Pythagoras https://www.pyth.eu/, a journal for secondary school students which appears six times per year, and Indagationes Mathematicae https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/indagationes-mathematicae, a research journal.

The KWG has a special section for young mathematicians: Young KWG. The main goal of Young KWG is to attract and support young mathematicians in the early stages of their careers. Young KWG aims to create a vibrant network for young mathematicians in the Netherlands, for example, by organizing events and workshops specifically for young mathematicians.
