Launch thematic book collection on the history of slavery and its repercussions

30 June 2023
Various VU scholars study the history of slavery and its aftermath from different perspectives and research disciplines. On the occasion of the Slavery Memorial Year, a thematic collection will be put together in the reading room on the first floor of the main building with the help of VU researchers and other experts in the field.

The thematic collection focuses on the Dutch history of slavery and its effects on society, but the collection also includes books on slavery, colonialism and racism in general. In addition, important case studies from other countries are highlighted.

Insights from different research disciplines
To create a broad perspective, researchers and experts from a variety of disciplines were invited to contribute to the collection. Several VU scholars have now offered suggestions for this collection. Thus, researchers from the fields of political science, religion & theology, anthropology, history, law and philosophy, among others, are involved in the project. Thanks to the diverse perspectives, a deeper understanding of historical events, psychological and socio-economic effects, and ongoing racism is emerging.

From past to future
The collection is not only representative of the past, but also tries to provide a glimpse into the present and the future. To provide this, modern works of art are displayed alongside various maps that data back to the slavery period. The collection will be expanded and added to throughout the year, as a means to achieving an integral selection. Currently, the collection is still growing, so do you have a book tip for the collection? Let us know at vraag.ub@vu.nl.

Have a look at the collection here. The physical collection can be viewed in the reading room on the first floor of the University Library.

The University Library would like to thank Bastiaan van Apeldoorn, Amisah Bakuri, Freek Colombijn, Rosemarijn Hoefte, Dienke Hondius, Sam Miske, Lianne Mulder, Jessica Roitman, Zawdie Sandvliet, Wouter Veraart and Pieter Wagenaar for their suggestions for this collection.
