Janne Nijman appointed as member Supervisory Board VU

6 January 2023
Prof. Dr. J.E. (Janne) Nijman has been appointed a member of the Supervisory Board of the VU Foundation on the recommendation of the employee participation as of January 1, 2023. She succeeds Prof. Dr. A.C.J. (Aafke) Hulk, who retired as a member of the Supervisory Board on December 31, 2022.

Janne Nijman is professor of History and Theory of International Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Amsterdam and senior researcher at the Amsterdam Center for International Law. She is also a professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) in Geneva. From 2015 to July 2022, she was chairman of the board and scientific director of the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague. Nijman is a member of the Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV) and chair of its Standing Commission on Human Rights. She chairs the Supervisory Board of World Press Photo and is a member of the Supervisory Board of PAX for Peace.

The Supervisory Board believes that her experience and expertise more than meet the profile and that she can fulfill the role of supervisor with conviction. In its consideration, the Board considered not only the substantive qualities of individual candidates but also the diversity within the Supervisory Board team. Ron Teerlink: "Over the past period we have come to know Janne Nijman as a values-driven supervisor with extensive expertise and experience in the academic field, which she combines with a focus on dialogue and human scale. With the importance she also attaches to diversity, she is an excellent fit for VU. We see in her a great asset to our Supervisory Board."

Janne Nijman will undergo an induction program in the coming period to gain further experience with the diverse facets of the administrative and academic world within VU.

The appointment was prepared by a selection committee consisting of two members of the Supervisory Board, one member from the Executive Board and four members from the Joint Assembly VU. On the recommendation of the Joint Assembly, the proposed appointment decision was made by the Supervisory Board and submitted for advice to the Appointment Committee of the VU Association Council of Members. The appointment by the Supervisory Board was approved by the Council of Members.
