After completing their research, PhD students face a plethora of work and choices. Where should they publish their research? What is the review process like? And what steps should they take if their article is rejected? The seminar provided beginning researchers with answers to these and many other questions.
Passion as a guiding principle
Hilde van Wijngaarden, director of the University Library, opened the seminar with an overview of the various services the library provides to researchers. Dr. Peter Bloem, associate professor affiliated with the Learning & Reasoning Group (VU), then shared his experiences in a personal story about his writing process. He emphasized the importance of striving for an effective article, with the primary advice being to write the article you want to write and write it with passion.
High-quality research
Dr. Paul van Lange, professor of Psychology at VU and seasoned author, editor, and reviewer, also emphasized the importance of passion as a driving force in conducting research. He shared insights he gained in his pursuit of creating high-quality research. To conclude, Dr. Paul Roos, esteemed editorial director of Biomedicine at Springer Nature, provided an extremely dynamic and practical perspective on the editorial aspects of publishing. He guided visitors through the submission and evaluation process to the selection of the right journal, offering concrete tips on the steps to follow.
Food for thought
The afternoon was filled with interesting presentations and a stimulating discussion that continued beyond the scheduled end time. Visitors had the opportunity to pose questions to the speakers and information specialists that were present. Due to its success, the University Library will organize this event again in 2024.
