Graduation research Océane Fourmentraux in StatOR

28 March 2023
This month, Econometrics and Operations Research student Océane Fourmentraux's graduation research was published in the journal StatOR.

Together with her supervisor Caroline Jagtenberg and colleague Pieter van den Berg from the Rotterdam School of Management, she thought about apps for community first responders. In the Netherlands, we know such an app as HartslagNu: it sends trained volunteers to patients in cardiac arrest, to perform CPR until the ambulance arrives.

Océane, Caroline and Pieter looked at notification strategies for such apps: which volunteer should receive a call and when? Here a balance needs to be struck between the patient's chance of survival and the inconvenience to volunteers. Using machine learning, they managed to optimise that issue.

The article (in Dutch) can be read here (page 22). Océane has since graduated and works as a PhD student in Pieter's department.
