The Common Vulnerabilities Scoring System (CVSS) is a world standard where a group of technical experts from industry and academia defines rules that will be then used for vulnerability assessment. Eventually this becomes a number from 0 (no worries) to 10 (disaster). This standard is used worldwide. For example if your software manages any credit card or digital payment whatsoever then you cannot have software vulnerabilities with a CVSS score higher than 4. If you sell a software to the US Federal Government you must monitor its vulnerabilities along the CVSS scores. It is also used by the Dutch Governement. After almost a decade a new version is now for public preview.
Fabio Massacci from VU Amsterdam is among the 47 world experts who contributed to it. The specification documents include the key contributors. The latest, best effort at the CVSS v4.0 Specification Document, User Guide, and Calculator are now available for pre-review (includes link to What's New presentation).
