Following the successful DAMR event on ‘mixed methods’ in migration research, this workshop will focus on interdisciplinary, qualitative research on migration and the human rights of migrants – from a legal perspective. One of the focal points of the Dutch Sectorplan on Legal Research for the period 2019-2024 is the development and support of empirical legal research. The recent years have accordingly seen a surge of academics incorporating other disciplines into legal research in the field of migration as opposed to conducting solely doctrinal legal research. Nonetheless, there are few opportunities to learn from (senior) researchers who have conducted such research and exchange experiences. This event aims to fill this gap by inviting established scholars to elaborate on their interdisciplinary legal research methodology and facilitating conversations about such research.
Ellen Desmet, Elif Durmus and Jasper Krommendijk have been invited to elaborate on their qualitative methodology and experience with interdisciplinary research in migration and/or human rights law. They will present their work in turn. In each session a discussant will provide some initial reflections on the presentation, after which there is time for questions and reflections from the audience. Each speaker has a different approach, such as socio-legal research, legal anthropology or empirical legal studies.
