Being the target of negative gossip, is very bad for you. You won’t have as many opportunities as someone who has a good reputation. In an interview with the Washington Post, Dr. Elena Martinescu discussed her research on gossip when working from home and at the office

Being the target of negative gossip, is very bad for you. You won’t have as many opportunities as someone who has a good reputation.

Dr. Elena Martinescu, postdoctoral research associate in the Force of Gossip project led by Prof. Bianca Beersma, discussed the role of gossip in the context of returning to the office after the pandemic. She discussed the crucial role of gossip in helping group members share information about others who might misbehave; by sharing this information  group members can make sure everyone cooperates in achieving group goals. Negative gossip can have very negative consequences for the targets, who will have fewer opportunities than others with a more positive reputation.
