Mirjam van Praag steps down as President as of 1 September 2023

3 November 2022
Mirjam van Praag has decided to step down as president of the Executive Board of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam as of 1 September 2023, after having been in office for 5.5 years. She informed the Supervisory Board, staff and students of VU Amsterdam today. Mirjam van Praag would like to return to science, entrepreneurship and have more time for her private life as of that date.

Mirjam van Praag: "I fulfil this beautiful position at our wonderful university with great ambition, pride, enthusiasm and energy. Every day I am grateful for the collaboration and connection in our VU Amsterdam community. Because every day I also speak to colleagues or students from whom I learn a lot and of whom I am proud. All this requires a 200% commitment and with that commitment and dedication I will continue for another year. After that, I would like to devote more time to my private life, science and entrepreneurship. From September 2023, I will start working as a professor of "Entrepreneurship & Society" at the VU Amsterdam School of Business and Economics."

Ron Teerlink, chairman of the Supervisory Board: "Mirjam has impressively led developments important to VU Amsterdam in sometimes turbulent times. She will continue to do so in the coming year. Although we would have liked to benefit from her leadership for longer, we obviously respect her decision." The Supervisory Board will consider how to fill the resulting vacancy.

Mirjam van Praag was appointed president of the Executive Board in early 2018. She is also part-time Professor of Entrepreneurship at Copenhagen Business School, where she set up the Maersk McKinney Moller Chair full-time until 2018. Previously, she was Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Amsterdam (2005-2013) from where she started and led the Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE).
