Workshop: Images, Power, Ownership of Narrative with G. Bengtsson 1 April 2026 15:30 - 17:00

Share
Join us for a workshop developed by artist Gustav Bengtsson, exploring imagery, autonomy and ownership. The workshop takes place in the VU ART SCIENCE gallery.

Images, Power, and the Ownership of Narrative, examines how images represent systems of power historically and today—across photography, film, archives, surveillance, and AI-based image technologies. Drawing on perspectives from visual anthropology, it focuses on questions of authorship, participation, and shared knowledge.

The workshop combines critical theory with artistic practice. It emphasises ethics as a shared and situated practice rather than a fixed position. Through simple, guided video exercises, participants will be encouraged to use the mobile phone as an artistic device to explore questions of identity, embodiment, and artistic research. The focus is on process and reflection rather than production.

Gustav Bengtsson is a Swedish video artist, filmmaker, curator, and educator based in Amsterdam. Working across experimental film, video art, and research, his practice explores the body, memory, gaze, and alternative ways of storytelling. He regularly gives workshops and lectures on video art, video essays, and experimental filmmaking, and curates the festival Video (H)our(s), dedicated to underground and artist-driven moving image practices.
