Pneumatic Hermeneutics: The Interface of Biblical Interpretation and Religious Experience with Reference to the Work of Craig S. Keener, Amos Yong, and Anthony C. Thiselton
Why do believers often come to different conclusions when they read the same Bible text? That question is central to Buban's thesis.
"Especially within Pentecostalism, personal experiences with God play an important role in the way people understand the Bible. My research shows that biblical interpretation is never separate from the context in which people live. Traditions, faith communities, social circumstances and personal experiences all influence how people understand the meaning of biblical texts.
My research shows that personal experiences play an important role in the way many Pentecostal Christians read the Bible and shape their faith. At the same time, the research warns against considering such experiences as definitive proof of the truth. People can experience something of God in their experiences of faith, but their insight always remains limited. He who believes, therefore continues to learn. New experiences can confirm existing beliefs, but they can also change them. The research therefore argues for intellectual modesty and openness to new insights."
