A behind-the-scenes look at industrial bacteria reveals bottlenecks to increased protein production
In the bioindustry, bacteria are often used to make proteins, for example to produce food, make fuel or develop drugs. Molecular biologist Mariah Kes examined the bottlenecks in protein production of the bacterium "Bacillus subtilis" and how they can be solved to increase the yield of various industrial proteins and enzymes.
Kes shows how a combination of techniques can be used to figure out how to modify the bacterium to produce more proteins, but also shows the potential pitfalls of those techniques and how to overcome them.
Kes and her colleagues found several improved bacterial strains that can be used in industry to produce different proteins. Thus, higher yields can be obtained from the same raw materials.
