Military personnel in healthcare during COVID-19: vital aid with lasting impact
During the coronavirus pandemic the Dutch armed forces provided long-term and large-scale support to hospitals, nursing homes, and vaccination campaigns. This fits into a broader development in which Defence is increasingly deployed domestically. This also raises fundamental questions about civilian control and the role of the military in society. Research by military scientist Huib Zijderveld shows that the domestic deployment of the armed forces during COVID-19 closely followed the course of the crisis.
