Mentale gezondheid in eigen hand? De belofte
en grenzen van digitale zelfregie

Mental health in your own hands: the promise and limits of digital self-management

Millions of people worldwide live with mental health difficulties. Even before seeking help from a healthcare professional, they are increasingly turning to apps, online programmes and AI chatbots. Digital support is accessible and always close at hand, but how effective are these tools really? And what opportunities do they offer for people who want to strengthen their mental health?

These questions are at the heart of the inaugural lecture by Annet Kleiboer, Professor of Clinical Psychology. She explores what people can do themselves to strengthen their mental health, and what role technology can play in this. Expectations around digital innovation are high, especially as pressure on mental healthcare continues to increase. In her inaugural lecture, Kleiboer examines, on the basis of scientific research, both the promise and the limits of digital self-management. She also addresses the importance of training scientist-practitioners: professionals who connect science, innovation and clinical practice. According to Kleiboer, it is precisely this combination of digital technology and the expertise of the therapist that is essential for the future of mental healthcare.
