On 30 October 2026 we're pleased to welcome Dorothy Roberts to the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to present her new book, The Mixed Marriage Project: A Memoir of Love, Race and Family.
Dorothy Roberts is the George A. Weiss University Professor of Law & Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, founding director of the Penn Program on Race, Science & Society, and a 2024 MacArthur Fellow. Her influential books include Killing the Black Body, Shattered Bonds, Fatal Invention and Torn Apart. They have shaped debates on reproductive justice, family regulation, policing, science and medicine.
In this memoir she turns to love, race and family. Two leading Dutch scholars will respond to the book:
Gloria Wekker, emeritus professor of Gender Studies at Utrecht University and author of White Innocence: Paradoxes of Colonialism and Race, and Guno Jones, Anton de Kom Professor of the History of Colonialism and Slavery at VU Amsterdam, whose work includes the politics of "mixedness" in colonial and postcolonial Europe.
The afternoon is chaired by Betty de Hart. It will take place in the OZW Building, Almazaal 1 + 2, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
