Anthropologist Marina de Regt is presenting her new book for the general public, "How Muna Became a Millionaire". In it, she recounts her long-standing friendship with a woman in Yemen and the role that money came to play in that friendship, especially when the war broke out.
It all began with a chance encounter at a wedding in Yemen. From there, a close bond developed between Marina de Regt and Muna. When Muna needed monthly medication, lost her job at the Central Bank, and the war made her life increasingly difficult, financial support became a regular part of their friendship. The book is about loyalty, the war in Yemen, and a question many will recognize: How far do you go when someone you care about keeps asking you for help?
"How Muna Became a Millionaire" was recently published by Jurgen Maas Publishers and was reviewed in this article in Trouw.
Following the presentation, several speakers will respond to the book, after which a plenary discussion will take place. The program will be in English. The book will be available for purchase afterward, and the afternoon will conclude with a reception.
