How have societies coped with historical droughts, and what lessons can they offer for securing water in the face of climate extremes today? This half-day symposium explores both historical and future droughts, the risks of cascading drought-to-flood events, and the social, political, and technological responses shaping (drinking) water security today. It includes themes such as: Environmental justice and water access inequalities, Drought coping measures - individual to institutional, and Different waters for different purposes.
Expect a mix of science and policy, along with a special visit to the 'Water Views' exhibition at the VU Art-Science Gallery.
We’ll open with introductions from research project leaders Petra van Dam and Anne van Loon, and host a range of voices bridging academic disciplines and practical perspectives. See the attached flyer for the preliminary presentation titles.
This event is organised by the VU projects Coping with Drought and PerfectSTORM, in collaboration with the Amsterdam Sustainability Institute (ASI) and the Drought in the Anthropocene network (DitA).

We’re inviting researchers and practitioners to present a poster or give a 3-minute talk on the theme:
"Different Waters for Different Purposes"
Each speaker will present a single visual - this could be a poster, infographic, image, or any impactful visual - to kick-start discussions around historical and contemporary challenges to (drinking) water security.
Interested in presenting? Let us know by July 1st via the attendance form at the top of the page.
