VU Mother Language Day 2025 13 February 2025 11:00 - 17:00

After a successful first edition, it is time for the second VU Mother Language Day on Thursday 13 February 2025.

There is plenty to do and experience on this day, including: language workshops, a visit to the language holobox, the premiere of the documentary VU Language Stories, a meeting on language diversity with VU- and international speakers and the festive launch of the online MOOC course Uitspraak Nederlands (Dutch Pronunciation). The day will conclude with drinks.

The morning programme is fully booked, there are still a few places for the documentary and the celebration in the Auditorium. Sign up here!

Programme

Language workshops (fully booked)

11:00-11:30 Mandarin Chinese
11:45-12:15 Jamaican Patois
12:30-13:00 Luxembourgish
13:15-13:45 Moroccan Tamazight

At the end of the workshop, you will be able to say a few sentences in your chosen language!

Premiere documentary VU Language Stories

Between 13:00-13:45, six members of the VU community talk about their native languages, the stories behind them and the importance of language at VU and in their lives.

Location: Auditorium

Festive meeting

At 14:00, the festive meeting will be opened by René van Woudenberg, dean of the Faculty of Humanities. Following this, VU lecturer and language researcher Petra Bos will reveal how many mother languages are spoken at VU in the lecture: 'The power of sound: how accents and dialects shape perceptions.’ 

Orhan Agirdag is professor of pedagogical sciences at KU Leuven. He will address the question ‘How do we move from linguistic diversity to multilingualism?’ His presentation on the big screen will be introduced live by lecturer and coordinator VU-NT2 Professional and Research Camille Welie.

A breathtaking choreography by Dansgroep Griffioen will be followed by the launch of the MOOC Uitspraak Nederlands by lecturer Anne Broekhuis and Annemarie Nuwenhoud, head of department VU-NT2. This also includes a role for the audience.

Professor of English literature Diederik Oostdijk will lead the meeting.

Closing drinks

At 16:00, the afternoon will end with a reception for all participants and guests in the room next to the Auditorium. Here you can exchange experiences and make valuable contacts in an informal atmosphere. We look forward to toasting together.

Holobox

In the main hall of the main building there is a Holobox, where you can continuously see and hear which languages are spoken at VU.
