Social media addiction among children 8 January 2025 17:00 - 18:30

Share
Children spend a lot of time on social media. Should the EU regulate to protect them from addiction? Tonight, we discuss this with two legal experts, a Member of the European Parliament, and an educational psychologist specializing in children's online media use.

From various perspectives, there is a growing call for European regulations to protect children from excessive social media use. The European Parliament has asked the European Commission to explore whether new rules are needed to safeguard consumers, particularly children, from addictive online services. A report commissioned by President Macron advocates banning social media use for individuals under 18. Macron also supports an EU-wide prohibition on social media access for children.

Does regulating children’s health fall within the EU’s responsibilities? What role do consumer protection laws and other existing regulations play in this issue? If the EU were to introduce new rules, how far should they go, and what aspects should be left to the social media platforms themselves? Additionally, how would such regulations interact with parental rights and children’s freedoms?
