Queer Science: how non-binary priests are closer to the divine 27 March 2025 16:00 - 17:30

Share
VU Pride presents: Queer Science. A series of science talks to show you academic views on all that is queer. In this edition of Queer Science we talk about: how non-binary priests are closer to the divine.

Ancient Mesopotamian and Greek sources describe priests who were seen as neither male nor female but transcended these categories. This granted them special powers, such as direct contact with the divine. At a time when the US president horribly seeks to erase gender diversity, this presentation will show how these ancient priests are only one example of how different cultures and eras have not only recognized multiple gender identities but also cherished those who exist beyond the male-female binary.

Your speaker: Michèle Meijer

Michèle is librarian for Religious Studies, Theology and Philosophy at the VU Library. She is also part of the library’s working group that critically reflects on the inherent colonial biases in the library’s collection and takes concrete steps towards a more inclusive library, focusing on collection description, acquisition, and presentation.
Before she started working at the library, she wrote a PhD thesis on Ancient Near Eastern influences on Greek religion, for which she studied the non-binary priests.
