Can you improve coincidence?
PhD candidate Stochastic modeling and optimization Nanne Dieleman investigated how systems and processes, influenced by chance and unpredictable events, can be optimized using mathematical and computer models. She investigated four applications: creating schedules in nursing homes, setting up production lines, improving search engines and simulating electric ambulances.
Dieleman shows that such models can achieve significant improvements and can be used flexibly for a variety of issues. An important practical application is its simulation model for electric ambulances, which provides insight into the impact of charging times on ambulance services. This model, tested in the province of Utrecht, is publicly available for broader applications.
