The Implementation of AI in Healthcare
Bas Becker examined the social implications of implementing artificial intelligence in clinical decision support systems and how this technology influences the process of organizational and medical decision-making.
Becker used an ethnographic approach and focused on the concrete practices of (Dutch) healthcare professionals to understand how they interpret, justify, and ultimately trust (or do not trust) the output of algorithms in the process of informed clinical decision-making. He specifically studied ICU practices in a large hospital and how ICU physicians interact with the technology. His research sheds new light on the implications of AI implementation for clinical practice.
