Data Conversations - Panel discussion 3 July 2025 12:00 - 13:30

Share
How can we build a resilient infrastructure for open science in the face of growing political pressures and threats to open data?

Recent global political shifts have raised concerns about the vulnerability of scientific research — particularly in certain fields of science. The pace and intensity of these developments mean that years of carefully collected research data and careers are at stake.

In this panel, two researchers from VU Amsterdam will be joined by Claudia Behnke (the research domain manager of SURF) and Irma Meinema (VU Chief Information Security Officer) to discuss the effect of the current geopolitical situation on science and VU Amsterdam. Together, we’ll explore safeguarding data, ensuring academic freedom and strengthen the infrastructure that supports open, transparent, and inclusive research.

Join us for this conversation! And as always: Lunch is provided.

Additional information on Data Conversations can be found on the register page.

The panel consists of:

Claudia Behnke is Manager Research Developer at SURF, ensuring researchers have access to the tools and expertise they need to advance scientific discovery. Under Claudia’s guidance multiple teams within SURF keep SURFdrive, ResearchDrive, Snellius and the HPC Cloud in general top of the line in safe and responsible research storage, analysis and processing. Claudia is actively engaged in European initiatives, including serving as co-chair of EUDAT, where she contributes to shaping collaborative solutions for data infrastructure across Europe.

Dr. Jens de Bruijn is an assistant professor at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM). He works on the DYNAMO global agent-based model which simulates adaptation and migration decisions of the coastal population in response to sea level rise. Jens holds a doctoral degree on the analysis of disaster-related social media, flood detection and disaster response. In this role, he also developed the Global Flood Monitor. On top of his research is Jens first line respondent on all research data management questions of his peers as faculty data steward.

Irma Meinema is VU Amsterdam’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). As CISO she oversees all information, cyber, and technology security at VU Amsterdam. On top of making sure all employees keep best practices in cyber security in mind, Irma also maps out potential threats on broader scale. As CISO she is continuously evaluating and managing the cyber and technology risk posture of the organization. Or in short, Irma makes sure research goes on.

Alexandre F. Gomes is a Research Fellow at Clingendael and VU Amsterdam alumnus. At Clingendael Alexandre is part of the EU & Global Affairs Unit and of the ‘Geopolitics of Technology and Digitalisation’ programme. His research focuses on the role of technology in geopolitics covering (inter)national security issues and discussions on economic security, de-risking and the changing global order. He looks at the position and role of the European Union in the technology rivalry between the US and China, both from the Protect and Promote policy points of view.
