ASI Symposium: The role of science in times of polarisation 6 March 2025 13:30 - 17:00

Share
How can we navigate the challenges of polarisation? What is the role of science in this context? And how can ASI contribute to positive societal change? Join this timely and crucial discussion during our upcoming ASI Symposium.

As we find ourselves in times of polarisation, it is crucial to find ways of interacting with it. This Symposium offers a space for reflection for the ASI community members and beyond. The event serves as an opportunity to come together, discuss, connect, and find a way forward in the increasingly complex architecture of the modern-day time.

What to expect?

The Symposium will begin with an offline round of MatchMaking, where our participants will have an opportunity to make new connections and network. Taking shape of Speed Networking (Business Speed Dating), the MatchMaking sessions during the ASI Symposium will help you step outside your bubble. Read more about the MatchMaking tool in the section below.

The event will be officially kicked-off with a welcome speech by Maurits van Tulder (Dean Sustainability VU), followed by keynotes by Eva Wolf (Tilburg University) and Sjoukje van Oosterhout (Milieudefensie), who will tackle polarisation from a practical and theoretical standpoint.

The Symposium offers a workshop module (15:00-16:00), where participants will join one of the following sessions: (i) Discover your polarised self; (ii) Fossil-free academia; and (iii) Making sense of polarisation. Read more about the workshop session in the section below. Please note that your workshop choice ought to be filled out in the registration form.

The final component of the program is the roundtable discussion, featuring Jaap SeidellJulia Schaumburg, and David Rossati. After the closing, we warmly invite the participants to stay for the borrel and the second round of MatchMaking.

This event is open to the VU community and external participants upon registration. Join us to contribute to a reflection on polarisation. We look forward to seeing you on 6 March!

Learn more about MatchMaking

At VU many people work on similar topics at different departments or faculties without being aware of their overlap in research topics. How to meet others working on the same topics as you? MatchMaking is a tool developed for ASI by Meike Morren that helps you find peers with similar research interests across VU faculties by identifying connections with other researchers. Read more about MatchMaking here. Please note that the current version offers insight into the first 300 profiles, but the app is soon to be updated with 4000 more VU profiles.
