In early December, the world witnessed the overnight flight of Bashar al-Assad, who had succeeded his father as Syria’s dictator. Within weeks, the rebel group HTS had seized control of major cities such as Hama, Homs, and Aleppo, and finally the capital, Damascus. The fall of the Assad regime signified an end to 53 years of cruel oppression of the Syrian people. Since then, proof of the cruelty of the former regime appeared on our news feeds, EU representatives visited Syria, and many Syrians all over the world celebrated their freedom.
But now that Syria has largely disappeared from our news headlines, what is happening on the ground? What do Syrians outside of Syria want and expect? In other words, what lies ahead for Free Syria?
The Netherlands is home to approximately 160,000 Syrians, many of whom fled the Assad regime as refugees. In 3D, we will have a conversation with experts and Syrian VU students about Free Syria and its future.
