Turning the Qualitative Gaze on Corporate Governance Research 2 April 2024 - 3 April 2024

Workshop “Turning the Qualitative Gaze on Corporate Governance Research”

Corporate governance researchers interested in developing and deepening their qualitative research skills are invited to join us at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam for a 2-day qualitative research workshop: “Turning the Qualitative Gaze on Corporate Governance Research.”

Two distinguished professors whose life work has been dedicated to advancing qualitative research scholarship in management and organisation studies will share their knowledge and experience in an interactive, hands-on research workshop, focusing specifically on corporate governance and board dynamics topic

  • Prof. dr. Ann L. Cunliffe, Professor of Organization Studies, FGV-EAESP, Bela Vista, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
  • Prof. dr. Karen Locke, Pat and Margaret Walsh Professor in Leadership and Ethics in the Raymond A. Mason School of Business at William & Mary.

With this focus, we aim to contribute to the longstanding call for more qualitative research in corporate governance and a need for “opening the black box of the boardroom” and the study of “the lived experience in the boardroom”. Despite numerous invitations for more qualitative research, corporate governance literature remains to be informed by mainly quantitative research relying, therefore, only on a limited understanding of boards and executive team processes. Qualitative research in corporate governance plays a critical role in understanding, interpreting and addressing the in-depth and complex range of contexts that organisations encounter when operating at the board and leadership levels. This workshop aims to be the first in a series of qualitative research methods workshops for corporate governance researchers (including quantitative scholars and everyone who has been doing qualitative research but wishes to expand their knowledge/techniques), providing an opportunity for scholars to develop their research skills in qualitative research methods.

How to apply

To participate, please:

  1. Express your interest in participating by filling in the registration form, before December 20, 2023. The workshop is limited to 20 participants. Please express your interest in time.
  2. Submit 750-1000 words extended abstract of your paper and 2-3 questions concerned with how to do qualitative research or theorise based on the qualitative data in the context of corporate governance research by sending an email to Prof. dr. Svetlana Khapova (s.n.khapova@vu.nl), before February 1, 2024.

For questions about the workshop, please contact Prof. dr. Svetlana Khapova (s.n.khapova@vu.nl).

Registration Fee

Includes all conference materials, refreshments, lunches, and a conference reception.

  • Early bird registration (before 1st February, 2024): € 250
  • Regular registration (after 1st February and onward): € 320
Programme

The workshop format will allow participants to explore the range of possibilities a “qualitative gaze” might bring to studying corporate governance and, as well, develop their repertoire of practices for engaging with qualitative data to advance theorizing . The intent is that the workshop will be directly applicable to attendees’ in-process qualitative projects.

  • The first day of the workshop will address the question, “How does researcher ontology impact research design, methods and interpretive possibilities for the corporate governance domain?”
  • The second day of the workshop will focus on how to interact with qualitative data to reshape analytic interpretation and inform new ways of theorizing corporate governance.

Both days will include a number of exercises and hands-on activities to facilitate the application of key concepts and applications to participants’ current projects.

In preparation for the workshop, participants will be asked to read a number of papers. Further, participants are asked to bring a short description of an in-process project which provides an overview of the research and includes some “data”(max 2 pages).
