SDG Academy: UN Biodiversity Conference COP16 Debrief 7 November 2024 16:00 - 17:00

Share
Join us for an expert debrief of the UN Biodiversity Conference COP16 to learn about the key takeaways of the Conference!

What are the key takeaways from the 2024 UN Biodiversity COP to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity? Join this session to learn from our VU experts who are participating in the COP16: Dr. Ina Lehmann and Dr. Mirja Schoderer. The session will offer an introduction to the general outcomes of COP16, and a reflection on the protected areas in Colombia.

COP 16 is the moment for revising the state of implementation of COP15's Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Parties to the Convention are expected to show the alignment of their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the Framework. COP16 will further develop the monitoring framework and advance resource mobilization for the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Under the logo of 'Peace with Nature', this Convention is based on the recognition of the current unequal relationships, extractive activities that overexploit the capacities of nature and that raise the need to improve the relationship between humans and ecosystems.

How to move forward and begin the process of making 'Peace with Nature'? Join us online on 7 November!

What is the Convention?

What is the Convention?

Signed by 150 leaders at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, the Convention on Biological Diversity is conceived as a practical tool for translating the principles of Agenda 21 into reality. It recognizes that biological diversity is about more than plants, animals, micro organisms and their ecosystems – it is about people and our need for food security, medicines, fresh air and water, shelter, and a clean and healthy environment in which to live.
