The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, commonly referred to as COP29, is currently hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan. Referred to as the 'finance COP', this year's climate summit focuses on, among other things, climate finance and the challenge of setting a new climate finance target (Robinson, 2024; UN News, 2024).
Conference of Parties (COP) is the series of formal meetings, where world leaders come together to measure progress to advance the Paris Agreement and the Convention, and assess the efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C as informed by the latest science. COPs are meant to serve as a space for negotiating the best ways to address climate change, leading to global change in the fight against the ongoing climate crisis. However, many critiques have been raised over the years, questioning the effectiveness of these meetings and stressing that these climate summits might be no longer "fit for purpose" (Harvey et al., 2024).
Through expert contributions of our guest speakers - David Rossati, Nicole van Maanen, and Oscar Widerberg - this SDG Academy delves into the developments of COP29, climate change adaptation, loss and damage mechanisms, and the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), a key element of the Paris Agreement, designed to set a new financial target to support developing countries in their climate actions post-2025.
This SDG Academy will be taking place in a hybrid set-up. Join us at the Green Office VU at 15:00 and make sure to stay for a drink and additional chats at Bar Boele.
