The Back of the Future: Smart Exoskeletons to Reduce Back Strain and Muscle Fatigue
Back pain is a common condition. On average, more than one-third of people experience it annually. Workers who are frequently exposed to high strain on the lower back are at greater risk of developing back pain. Exoskeletons (wearable technology in the form of a backpack) that support the back can be a versatile tool to reduce lower back strain. Movement scientist Niels Brouwer investigated whether these devices can precisely tailor their support to the amount of force the user’s back muscles produce during a specific task. One of the findings of his research is that the design of back exoskeletons has been improved so that they do not hinder the movements the user wants to make while still providing adequate support.
