Both the givers and the receivers of a sermon play a role in a learning and formation process, argues Matthew Norman.
In his dissertation Inviting response(ability): developing a learning-centered homiletic, philosopher/pedagogue Norman investigates the pedagogical aspect of preaching, in particular in the interaction between the givers and receivers/audience of a sermon. "The goal of my study is to develop a doctrinal homiletics (preaching), in which the participants exercise their 'responsibility' and participate in a shared process of practical theology."
"Participants are invited to explore and theologically wrestle with God, sharing their impressions, thoughts, beliefs, and learning experiences. As they do so, the preacher assists them by bearing the accountability of their individual and mutual transformation and developing a shared theological practice."
