“Emerson’s vision of an inclusive, nature-based spirituality focused on caring still holds value today, offering a refreshing alternative to more exclusive religious views.”
In this dissertation teacher Jeremiah Carlton investigates Ralph Waldo Emerson’s unique worldview that emphasizes the interconnectedness of all beings and advocates for a nature-based spirituality that promotes human flourishing.
“Essentially, Emerson teaches us to look within and care for the world around us for a better, more connected life. He developed a unique way of thinking about spirituality and ethics that connects all beings and emphasizes living in harmony with nature.
“My main conclusion is that Emerson’s ideas encourage personal spiritual experiences over strict religious rules and highlight the importance of self-reliance and caring for others. He believed that we’re all interconnected, which means we should support each other and the environment.
“My findings emphasize the value of adopting an inclusive, nature-focused approach to spirituality and ethics. That’s important for individuals seeking personal growth, community organizers promoting unity, and policymakers addressing social issues. By applying Emerson's principles, people can enhance their connections with themselves, others, and the environment, fostering healthier societies."
