PhD defence B. Zachariah 5 December 2024 09:45 - 11:15

An inquiry into the enablers of ‘human response capacity’ in individuals and communities during instances of mental distress in India

Worldwide, a significant number of people face mental health challenges. Bobby Zachariah explored the potential of communities to be part of the solution. He demonstrates that communities show responsibility for their problems and a willingness to collaborate on overcoming challenges. When families and neighbors provide mutual support, it fosters recovery.

SALT Approach
Involving the affected individuals and neighborhoods in the solution is crucial for addressing the stigma surrounding mental health, leveraging community competencies, building ownership, and promoting sustainable solutions. The theory of human response capacity and the SALT approach (Support / Appreciate / Listen / Team) provide a framework for understanding and utilizing the inherent strengths of people. Volunteers are a valuable resource, dedicating their time and skills to address challenges. Spirituality emerges as an important factor, offering hope but also sometimes evoking fear.
