Exploring Emerging Intelligent Technologies and the Future of Knowledge Work: The Case of AI in Radiology

How do emerging intelligent technologies and the organizing of knowledge work constitute one another? This PhD dissertation answers the research question in three chapters. The first chapter examines artificial intelligence (AI) discussions within the radiology community, revealing fragmented understanding due to lack of specific contexts. The second chapter investigates the development of a deep learning system, focusing on how clinicians and engineers collaborate around this complex technology and how their collaboration changes over time. The third chapter analyzes the use of advanced image analysis software and demonstraties that the value, functionality, and social meaning of technology emerge in the interaction with users. The dissertation contributes to understanding how AI and knowledge work influence each other, create new professional roles, blur traditional boundaries, and erect new boundaries in organizations. It highlights the need for coordinated organizational efforts to realize AI's potential and emphasizes the significant influence of knowledge workers on AI's development and impact.
