In this presentation, I will provide an overview of our Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) research on national and international trends in adolescent mental health in the last two decades. Potential explanations for (inter)national trends will be addressed, with a particular focus on schoolwork pressure and social media both on the individual and country level, and gender equality on the national level. In addition, I will discuss the ‘prevalence inflation hypothesis’ as a possible explanation for the current trends in mental health problems. Second, I will zoom into our (inter)national research on associations between school characteristics and adolescent mental health.
