ASI Urban Gardening Symposium: 21 November 2024 21 November 2024 14:00 - 17:00

With world population projected to grow to 10 billion by 2050 and expected to predominantly live in the cities, changes in urban food production are needed

By 2050, the world population is expected to grow to 10 billion, of which 68% are expected to live in urban areas. This will increase demand for food and put more pressure on land, water and other resources, highlighting the need for sustainable planning and management of food production and processing in and around urban areas. At this symposium, we will discuss various aspects of urban gardening. Some presentations focus on the practice itself – which can range from small-scale production in roofs, walls, balconies, backyards and school compounds to large(r)-scale production in allotments and farms on the edge of the city. Others concentrate on the practitioners and the level of inclusivity, as well as economic aspects and governance. We will conclude with brainstorming on priorities for research in urban agriculture, identifying common interests and close the event off with borrel and drinks.

The Urban Gardening Symposium is an initiative of the ASI Research Cluster: Food, Agriculture and Land Use, coordinated by Dr. Lia van Wesenbeeck (School, of Business and Economics, VU Amsterdam) and Dr. Denyse Snelder (Centre for International Cooperation, VU Amsterdam). Amsterdam Sustainability Institute provides an inclusive umbrella for sustainability-related research at VU.

The event is open for all. Make sure to register!
