Title: Food web aggregation: the bigger the better?
Abstract: Since the first food web was published in 1923, massive developments have been made regarding data and analysis. We have trophic data from various resources, of ever-increasing quality and quantity. Also, we have built an arsenal of computational and analytical techniques. But what is linking data to analysis is still extremely poor: how to construct networks, how to build network models? This intermediate chain needs knowledge and expertise, maybe also some intuition, and not easy to automatize. I describe the problem on the example of food web aggregation, why is it important and unavoidable, how to do it, how not to do it and what are the consequences of inconsistent aggregation.
