Degrowth is an agenda that proposes to reduce economies’ material footprint, by downscaling and slowing down production and consumption. In so doing, it also promises to foster social equality. Urbanization is the engine of global economic growth. It is thus important to explore the implications, drivers and potential limits of degrowth for urban areas. Cities in fact cover only 2% of the planet but consume 75% of its raw materials and energy. Growth-led urbanization is also fundamentally coupled with increase in social inequality at both urban and planetary scale. This presentation will introduce a degrowth framework for urbanization. It will question the key institutions that drive cities’ expanding ecological and social impact, and propose a degrowth approach to urban policy and action.
