Inclusion and Motivation in healthcare education and practice: Why should you even care?
We are living in a society with increasingly diverse patient and student populations, while the healthcare workforce is not diverse. Are we ready to train health professions students with diverse backgrounds for diverse background patients? Are we creating inclusive learning environments to stimulate the “right” type of student motivation, which is crucial for learning?
Inclusion is including or being included through a sense of belonging and meaningful participation. Motivation is the drive to engage in something. When you engage in studying because you want to, you have “Wantivation”. If you do it because you “must”, you have “Mustivation”. Wantivation leads to better learning, success, and well-being than mustivation. Wantivation is enhanced when you have ABC (Autonomy, Belongingness, Competence). Then, what is the ABC of Inclusion?
In her inaugural lecture, Rashmi Kusurkar will take you on a journey with motivation and inclusion, their relation and importance in education.
