It's time for a new series of NEWConnective's Great Minds close readings. In this series of three sessions we discuss fragments from the book Of War and Love by Dorothee Sölle. We reflect and analyze various passages from her work. How do war and love relate to each other?
Sölle was a liberation theologian and obtained her doctorate by making the connection between theology and poetry. She was also active in politics and spoke out against, among other things, the Vietnam war, and injustices in developing countries.
Although Dorothee Sölle was a well-known figure – being a main voice in the resistance against the arms race of NATO and the Soviet Union – in this day and age she is only read by a hand full of theologians. Together we’ll translate her 1984 work Of War and Love from the period of the Cold War to our own time and crises. What can we learn from this 80s gem, that is a mix between a manifest and poetry?
