"Everyone assumes that we’ll be able to love instinctively. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, we still accept that the family is the primary school for love. Those of us who do not learn how to love among family are expected to experience love in romantic relationships."

The new academic year brings a new series of NEWConnective's Great Minds close readings. In this series of three sessions, we will cover excerpts from the book All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks. We will be reflecting on and analysing various passages from her work. What is love? What does it mean to love? What role does love play in our society?

bell hooks was an American author, theorist, educator, and social critic. She is best known for her writings on race, feminism, and class. All About Love: New Visions is a book by bell hooks published in 1999 that discusses aspects of romantic love in modern society. Each chapter discusses a different aspect of love. Although almost 25 years old, the book is still very relevant to us and our society today.
