Title: The Social Side of AI: Exploring how AI Systems affect Professionals’ Social Relationships
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems have the potential to transform professionals' interpersonal interactions within the organisational context. It is noteworthy that recurring interpersonal interactions are the foundation for social relationships, which can significantly influence employees' well-being, organisational identification, performance, and commitment. However, we know little about the potential changes to professionals' social relationships due to the introduction of emerging technologies. Based on an in-depth qualitative case study at a major German bank undergoing digital transformation, we aim to explore the potential effects of two AI systems in financial loan consultancy that are proposed to enhance traditional decision-making practices performed by consultants. While there is an anticipation that both systems could decrease consultants' interpersonal interactions, it remains unclear how these AI systems affect consultants’ social relationships. Our study seeks to understand potential differences related to the varying opportunities these AI systems might offer for consultants to demonstrate value to clients and colleagues through their work (appreciation), possibly exert influence over clients' and colleagues' behaviour (status), and apply their knowledge in their work processes (expertise). This study aims to shed light on the nuanced impacts of AI technologies on interpersonal workplace interactions and employees’ social relationships.
