Then join the Vidi, Vici and ERC Leadership program.
Scientists spend much of their time getting grants for good research. Sometimes it takes a long time to get a grant, sometimes it succeeds immediately but often the grant still comes unexpectedly.
Leading a research team is often perceived as an inconvenient sideline at the expense of time one would rather spend on teaching and research. Leading is a relatively new and different role for many scientists with responsibilities that one is not at all familiar with, that raise questions and where one can become searching in what exactly is expected.
Also, the sense of responsibility (and the influence you now have on the careers of others) is strong and can even be paralyzing. There are high expectations of these leaders, of quality research and teaching. Finding a balance between individual and teamwork is therefore especially important. In addition, science is increasingly working in multidisciplinary research teams within a context of high workloads and a changing climate that calls for a multicultural and inclusive approach.
In the Vidi, Vici and ERC Leadership program, spread over 6 months with trainers and guest speakers from inside and outside VU, you will develop insights and tools to strengthen your personal effectiveness in everyday work situations and increase your self-direction in your own career.
