Teaching Inner Development for Outer Change

A Broader Mind in Practice Workshop Series

Do you want your education to prepare students for the complex societal and environmental challenges? What skills and attitudes can help students to navigate through an uncertain future? What is your role as a teacher in facilitating the inner dimension alongside the (inter)disciplinary knowledge?

You will tackle these questions in this series of four workshops, in which you discover how to encourage students to broaden their views, see issues from different perspectives, increase their social awareness, and help their self-development.

Learning objectives
 In a co-creative and experiential setting, you will:

  • get acquainted with the ABM educational philosophy and design an intervention that translates it into your educational context;
  • formulate a clear vision for educating socially and personally engaged students;
  • encounter innovative teaching practices to foster the inner development of your students;
  • reflect on your role as a teacher in supporting students to develop “a Broader Mind”.

In a nutshell, this workshop series will broaden your horizon and provide you with practical tools to build future-proof education, in which you challenge your students to make a difference in the world.

For whom?
This programme is offered to anyone directly or indirectly involved in teaching at the VU, such as (junior)lecturers, PhD Students, student advisors, and subject coordinators. It is recommended having obtained a BKO/UTQ certificate.

Why this workshop series?
At the VU Amsterdam, we challenge ourselves to look beyond the boundaries of our discipline, resulting in a broader understanding of society and ourselves. ‘At VU, you don't become something, you become someone,’ we promise our students. This is what we call A Broader Mind (ABM). This way we hope that our education contributes to students who can reflect on their values and qualities, and feel agency to make a difference in the world. Conventional education models, however, often fail to address the inner dimensions of outer change —such as our collective mindsets, values, and cognitive, emotional, and relational capacities. This limitation can lead to a shallow understanding of sustainability and broader societal issues, leaving students ill-equipped to engage critically with diverse perspectives and the pressing challenges of the modern world (Tongeren, P. et al. (2024)).

Programme
In this 4-session workshop series, we will get acquainted with the educational philosophy of ABM, and how it can inspire you in your own teaching context. During the workshop series, you will write a personal manifesto outlining a vision for educating socially and personally engaged students. You will be introduced to various innovative teaching practices such as Community Service Learning and Art-based learning, known to support students in developing relevant reflective and interpersonal skills. Following these examples, you will (re)design your own teaching practices and receive feedback from your peers to refine them. The sessions will be hands-on and provide time to slow down and look at your teaching from a different angle.

We are here to support you. Join us for this workshop series, become part of a supportive community, acquire innovative teaching practices, and contribute to future-proof education.

Please note: This is a pilot, and we will co-create parts of this programme together, tailoring it to your teaching needs.
