Course Description
Empirical researchers make many assumptions and choices during the empirical research process. The validity of research outcomes crucially depend on the validity of these assumptions and choices. This course will focus on effect studies and predictive modeling.
The course chooses a philosophical approach, in that it focuses mainly on the underlying assumptions of estimation models. In other words, it focuses on the decisions that researchers (should) make during the research process. Some of the topics that will be dealt with are causal inference, RCTs, quasi-experimental studies (effect studies), over-identification, out-of-sample estimation, functional form choices and machine learning (predictive modeling).
