How to build an Academic Career

After the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to: structure and manage their phd project in a timely way, engage in academic networking, understand the publication process and contribute to it, and prepare for the (academic) job market.

This course is organized as a series of workshops designed to equip PhD candidates with the important knowledge and skills required to build an academic career. Each workshop targets various aspects that become relevant at a different phase of the PhD trajectory.

The course consists of 6 workshop sessions (3 hours each) distributed throughout 3 academic years (September – July). Each workshop will entail an interactive panel with experienced faculty members from different ABRI tracks

Dr. Mohammad Rezazade Mehrizi

Mohammad is an associate professor in Knowledge, Information and Networks research group, at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

His interest is to understand and help organizations and their associated communities to unlock their historical chains that prevent them from making a better future. Thus, he is researching how organizations unlearn their outmoded experiences, discontinue their obsolete information systems, learn and unlearn from their failures and incidents, and renovate their established business models to be able to tap the opportunities of new technologies such as big-data analytics.

Course Description

This course is organized as a series of workshops designed to equip PhD candidates with the important knowledge and skills required to build an academic career. Each workshop targets various aspects that become relevant at a different phase of the PhD trajectory. The course covers the following themes:

  1. How to setup and manage your PhD project
  2. How to make sense of academic literature: from classic to recent
  3. Finding your way in the academic community
  4. Developing your academic outputs: framing, structuring, and targeting academic publications
  5. Working and learning through the publication process: rejections, revisions, and reviewing
  6. What’s next? Preparing for the (academic) job market

Study Characteristics

  • Study period: October 2026 – May 2027 (Starting Period 1)
  • Credits: 2 ECTS
  • Tuition fee: €500 (20% discount for early bird registration)
  • Course participants are not expected to complete all course modules within one year. In fact, it is highly recommended that PhD candidates can join the various workshop modules at different stages of their trajectory over the first 3 years of their PhD journey, i.e., when the offered content will be most relevant.
  • Teaching methods: 6 workshops.
  • Assessment: workshop participation, completion of 6 preparation assignments, completion of 6 reflection reports, and final professional learning and development manifest. 
  • The course is open to ABRI PhD candidates as well as PhD candidates from the VU and other Dutch and international universities engaged in research projects broadly related to business and management or organization studies.
