Course Description

Module I: How to write a quantitative journal article and get it published
21 April 2026, 12.00-15.00
Taught by dr. Loes Aaldering

This class focusses on how to write and publish a quantitative journal article. We will discuss the following topics:

• Structure of a good quantitative paper

• Issues related to the publication process

• Issues related to open-science and research ethics (short)

To do before the workshop

One week before the course starts (deadline: April 14, 2026), please send me: a) your top 3 topics that you want to discuss in class relating to publishing quantitative papers; b) the abstract of a paper you want to publish (which we might use for an in-class writing exercise in class)

Module II: How to write a qualitative journal article and get it published
23 April 2026, 12.00-15.00
Taught by prof. dr. Kathy Davis

This class tackles the issue of how to get a journal article published – an endeavor which is often fraught with uncertainty, difficulties, and even outright suffering.  Drawing upon my experiences as editor, author and reviewer, I will address how to write a journal article, find a journal, survive the review cycle and manage the revision process. Participants will do a writing exercise aimed at making the articles they want to write just a little more interesting and, hopefully, a lot more publishable.

To do before the workshop:

Write a few lines about an article you would like to write or are in the process of writing or have completed, but not yet published.  This will be the basis for the exercise which will be done in the class.

Optional readings:

K. Davis (2016) ‘Writing for undergraduates,’ European Journal of Women’s Studies 23(1):3-5.

K. Davis (2010) ‘On generosity and critique,’ European Journal of Women’s Studies 17(3):187-191.

Module III: Peer review
7 May 2026, 14.00-17.00
Taught by prof. dr. René Bekkers

During a PhD, you will attempt to publish your work in scientific journals. What can you expect from the scientific criticism that you receive in peer review? How should you deal with comments, suggestions and requests from editors and reviewers? What do journals expect from peer reviewers, and how can you write a good review? To participate in this interactive workshop, you’ll need to complete an assignment and submit it three days before the workshop. Please make sure that you plan enough time to work on the assignment: it will take about 8 hours to complete.
