E-Learning: how to write research papers

This online course is designed to help you to develop effective academic writing skills. We will review the principles of effective writing, examples of good and bad writing and tips for making the writing process easier. You will work on improving your academic writing skills through studying theory, performing analysis of published texts, and working on exercises.

Course Description

Writing a scientific paper can be a difficult and laborious task. Even more so when English is not your native language. This online course is designed to help you to develop effective academic writing skills. We will review the principles of effective writing, examples of good and bad writing and tips for making the writing process easier. You will work on improving your academic writing skills through studying theory, performing analysis of published texts, and working on exercises. Moreover, you will be working on writing, or revising, your own text, while receiving peer feedback and expert coaching. Focus will be on writing the introduction  of a research paper and a cover letter.

Topics include:

–  Structuring an introduction, including the CARS (Creating A Research Space) model

–  Using the right tenses

–  Writing coherent paragraphs

–  Improving text flow by writing effective sentences

–  Helping your readers find significant points

–  Academic vocabulary

–  Referring to other sources (avoiding plagiarism, paraphrasing, and reporting)

–  Tips and tricks for writing a cover letter

–  Tips and tricks for writing your discussion section
