Become a buddy for international students!

Are you interested in other cultures and improving your language skills? Or have you just gotten back from a semester abroad and do you wish to continue being part of an international community? Become a buddy for our international exchange students!

What do we expect from you?
As a buddy, you will be matched to a few exchange students who come to study at VU Amsterdam during the first semester (mid-August to January) or the second semester (end of January to June). You will be expected to answer questions about what it’s like to study at VU Amsterdam, the best places to go out in Amsterdam, Holland’s major tourist sites… everything that has to do with studying and living in Amsterdam and the Netherlands.

In short, you will be showing them the ‘Dutch way of life’!

Before we match you to the exchange students, you are required to participate in a workshop about intercultural communication. The workshops for the second semester of the academic year 2022/23 will take place in December 2022 and/or January 2023.

Please note that you must be available from the time our international exchange students arrive in Amsterdam. The introduction programme for the second semester of 2022/23 will start on Friday 3 February 2023.

We will organise several social activities during the semester, starting with a welcoming Buddyborrel (to be held on Friday evening 3 February 2023), followed by a Buddy Pubquiz, a Buddy Karaoke and, occasionally, a Buddy Picnic. You are expected to attend these social activities, together with your international students.

What do you get in return?

    • Becoming a buddy is a good experience if you wish to go on exchange yourself. For that reason you will receive an extra point on your scorecard (if you are a buddy in the first semester);
    • You will be helping out international students and you will make friends from all over the world;
    • You can take part in our social activities free of charge;
    • You will receive an ESN membership card;
    • Your (English) language skills will certainly improve;
    • Participating in the buddy programme will look good on your CV;
    • You will receive a Buddy certificate at the end of the programme.

How do I apply?
We have received enough applications for the second semester. It is currently no longer possible to apply.

Who organises the programme?
The VU buddy programme for incoming exchange students is organised by the International Office in collaboration with ESN VU Amsterdam.
